Church Life

Oakland Kids

You’ll learn quickly that we prioritize next gen ministry here at Oakland, and we are confident that your child will have a fantastic time at Oakland Kids building friendships, laughing A LOT, burning off energy, and of course learning to have true friendship with Jesus! Teenagers and adults can volunteer to join our fun-loving and friendly teams; see Lisa Marsh or Jenalyn Pierce to volunteer. Clearances required.

Nursery: infants & toddlers (Sunday morning services)

Oakland Kids: kindergarten through fourth grade (Sunday services, Wednesday nights)

CrossRoads: fifth and sixth grade (Sunday School, Wednesday nights)

Oakland Youth

Your teenager will love belonging to a community of faith with other teens in a casual atmosphere. And adults can serve with a crew who loves Jesus, loves to have a good time, and loves discipling teenagers! Oakland Youth meets on Wednesday nights at 6:30pm (only when school is in session), as well as weekend trips, lock-ins, and more. See Youth Director Nick Ramirez to volunteer. Clearances required.

School of the Spirit
Scheduled twice a year, join Pastor Jeremy Barkley for a weekly, comprehensive study on the Holy Spirit—a powerful curriculum that hundreds of believers in the Johnstown region, from various churches and Christian traditions, have already passed through. Each week involves a brief video followed by teaching & stories from Pastor Jeremy and open discussion. Keep your eyes peeled for the next one!
Women's Ministry

All ladies are invited to join us every fourth Saturday of the month at Panera at 8:30am to gather & grow! Plus we have painting parties, retreats, conferences, and more scheduled throughout the year—so keep your eyes peeled! See Joanne Stahl or call the church office for more information.

Men's Ministry

Join us for a men’s breakfast at 8am the last Tuesday of each month at Perkins—you’ll be glad you did!

The Story of Marriage

Twice a year, dozens of couples and singles complete this powerful video series by John & Lisa Bevere, hosted by Pastor Jeremy here at Oakland Church. Whether single, single again, engaged, or married, you will learn about God’s design for a healthy and holy marriage.

Widow's Mite

Widows of all ages and stages are invited to join us as for connection, hope, and laughter as we gather & grow. Meeting times vary—see Robin Hamilton or call the church office for info about our next meetup.

Worship

Music Ministry

Our music ministry exists to nourish a worship culture at Oakland Church that is biblically faithful, Spirit-filled, musically rich, and multi-generational. We have a wide, committed army of volunteers that make up Oakland Worship: musicians, vocalists, a traditional choir for our 8:30am service, a worship choir in our 11:00am service for special events and more. Click here to see the Oakland Worship Handbook. See Worship Pastor Josh Watts to learn about the audition process.

Production

Sound: Enhance the music ministry and invite worshipers into a sonically robust experience—both in-house and for the live stream. See Worship Pastor Josh Watts to get involved.

Screen: Keeping up with lyrics and sermon slides might seem like a simple way to get involved—but a crucial way to contribute to the worship experience. See Kim Hirko to get involved.

Live Stream: Our 11:00 live stream delivers the Gospel to hundreds of households across Johnstown, the United States, and even globally. See Kevin Custer to get plugged in.

Greeters & Ushers

Are you a happy, friendly person? Do you enjoy making people feel welcome? Join our team of greeters and ushers! Greeters offer a warm “hello” to visitors and point them in the right direction; ushers help people find seating as needed, as well as help with some service elements, such as directing people during Communion. If you can smile—then see Wendy Thomas (8:30) or Kris Kozuch (11:00) to join this fun team!

Prayer

Our prayer team arrives early to pray with the pastors, worship team, and key members of the Sunday service and make themselves available to pray with people during altar calls. This ministry requires spiritual maturity, people skills, and the ability to keep in step with the Spirit. See one of the pastors to receive training and join this special team.

Furnace Room

Join us for this twice-a-month time of guided intercession and open-ended worship! This intimate, small service is perfect for soaking in the Presence of the Holy Spirit and receiving personal ministry. The Furnace Room is held in the Youth Room every first and third Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm.

Digital Arts

Oakland’s digital arts ministry includes photography, video production, and graphic design. If you have the eye and the skill to create content that is culturally relevant and fresh, please see Worship Pastor Josh Watts.

Oakland Online

Help us advertise events, communicate the vision of Oakland, and interact with people—and most importantly, share the Gospel—by creating content for our social media platforms and our website. See Worship Pastor Josh Watts to get connected.

Outreach

Shut-In Visitation

Get matched with a member of our congregation who is a shut-in or lonely, and connect with him or her through visits, phone calls, cards, etc. at least once a month. Call the church office to get in the loop.

Hospitality

Help decorate and set up for special meals and events, or bake cookies, pies, and cakes for special events—as well as serve where needed during special events. See Darlene Bain to get connected!

Transportation

This team is made of up happy, friendly folks who serve on rotation to drive the church van to provide transportation to and from worship services (and sometimes other church events as needed). See David Long or call the church office to get connected. Thank you!

Funeral Dinners

This team prepares and serves a meal for bereaved families on the day of a funeral. Because of the nature of this ministry, this team is happy to serve even with short notice. Please see Darlene Bain to join this team.

Soup Make and Take

Every 2nd Saturday morning of the month, a small team has a blast cooking, preparing, and delivering soup to families in need. Come join us the next time we meet (9am in the Oakland Kitchen)—you’ll be happy you did!

Local and Global Missions

Oakland Church has a long history of championing missionaries and mission groups with our prayers and finances. To see a list of local and global missions we support, click here.

Safety

Safety Team

We prioritize the safety and health of everyone who visits Oakland. To that end, our Safety Team is committed to being trained and prepared to ensure a smooth experience for everyone during Sunday services, midweek services, and special events. To join our Safety Team, you must pass a thorough background check and clearances, as well as complete several trainings.

Medical Team: This arm of the Safety Team is made up of doctors and nurses who are already present at our services and are trained to help should any issue arise, ranging from applying a Band-Aid to something more urgent. See Chuck Penatzer to join this arm of the Safety Team.

Next Gen: This arm of the Safety Team ensures the protection of minors during services. This team works closely with Oakland Kids to ensure that only staff and those volunteers with the appropriate clearances are allowed to be in our kids wing, and monitors hallways and entrances. See Lisa Marsh or Jenalyn Pierce to get involved.

Security: This arm of the Safety Team monitors hallways, entrances, and security cameras to ensure Oakland Church remains safe. See Greg Varner about ways to get involved.
